MC-QUEST

A multicultural benchmark of internet memes

MC-QUEST is an academic research project by KAUST (a follow-up to the M-QUEST paper). We are collecting memes from many different cultures — and we prefer toxic memes: ones that are offensive or harmful within their own culture, the kind a global platform moderator would miss without local knowledge. Verified native contributors upload memes from their own culture and answer a short annotation questionnaire about each one; the images, answers, and metadata become a research dataset for evaluating how well AI systems understand culture-specific memes and detect culture-specific toxicity.
